Introduction

Protocols for Magic (working title) looks at the intersection of Art and Magic as a means to facilitate the development of idiosyncratic Magic practices through artistic expression and creation.

Research questions
  1. How can artistic/creative expression form a personal conduit to engaging with Magic?
  2. What lays at the intersection of Art and Magic and how does it inform magic practices outside of existing pre-established systems?
  3. How may one facilitate this connection between Art and Magic through practice protocols?

It positions Magic and Art as concepts in flux, inherently personal, yet always shaped by the larger systems they exist in. Whether implicit or explicit. As such, Art as the conduit to Magic, "magical Art", is always subjective but never neutral. In other words, my thesis does not aim to find a pseudo-universal framework for the interpretation of Magic, but rather, investigate varying possibilities for practicing art-based Magic through personal creative expression. Leaving the necessary space to incorporate personal belief and symbolic systems when engaging with Magic.

(...)

The subject for this thesis originated from a personal fascination with magic-themed art and ongoing interest in forming frameworks for my own personal practice of Magic. It also stems from a perceived lack in resources, especially publications, that cover more eclectic forms and frameworks of Magic which are separate from existing systems of belief and/or religion.

(...)

Chapter #1 ✧

Key components
  • Art and Magic as interconnected practices throughout history
  • Different understandings and theories on Magic (practices)
  • Define my personal position and motivation within the thesis

The first chapter introduces the concept of Magic through exploring varying working definitions and establishes Art and Magic as interconnected practices, from a historical and societal perspective. The references used will also create the bounds and scope of my position and motivation in regards to the thesis subjects.

Magical art has existed as a form of human expression since the dawn of time.

This chapter may give a brief overview on:

  • ancient magic practices
  • art and magic throughout history
  • the history of contemporary magic practices

Much of our modern views and understanding on Magic is heavily influenced by the Western esoteric and occult movements of the 19th and early 20th century. These movements directly influenced the conception of the more systematized modern Magic practices that exist today. Such as New Age spiritualism, Wicca, Neo-Paganism, Satanism, etc. (DK, 2020) (Williams, 2025)

(...)

While it is important to acknowledge and reference existing magic practices and reflect on how they may influence our modern conceptualization of Magic and the public discourse around it, my aim for the thesis and project is to intentionally avoid utilizing or replicating too much of a single existing practice. Partly because one of my main motivations for this project is my perceived lack of resources and publications on practicing Magic (whether through art or otherwise) that are separate from or not directly reflecting established religions/esoteric belief systems (most notably Wicca and New Age esotericism).

Most general definitions describe Magic (noun) as a force, or the employing of a force outside of the bounds of Science or measurable natural laws, able to affect reality, attributes of reality or someone's perception there of. With the specific interpretation of the "force", in other words, the "source of magic" depending on cultural and historical contexts.

Other sources may frame Magic as a “mode-of-thinking”, the lens through which one may perceive and engage with the world. Through this view, Magic isn’t necessarily described as the conceptual manifestation of “invisible forces” but rather a observable psychological phenomena. Often as a means to distance Magic from supernatural implications. (Sorensen, 2006) (Dukes, 2002)

(...)

Although these approaches to defining Magic are not necessarily in opposition to each other, I may use them as a framework for categorization when analyzing different understandings of Magic. Distinguishing between "force-based" Magic and "mind-based" Magic or in-between forms of Magic theories and methodologies.

Outlining the historical context of Magic and Art, and establishing frameworks for working definitions will inform my approach to analyzing examples of art-based magic practices in chapter two. Equally create the grounds for my personal position and methods used in the chapters following, including my graduation project.

✧ Chapter #2 ✧

Key components
  • Artistic practice for magical purposes - Analysis of references
  • Medium and form - How art and magic inform each other
  • Reference take-aways

The second chapter will discuss "art in practice for magical purposes" and look at a selection of art-based magical practices, as well as artists who engage with Magic through their work.

In his essay Art and Magick in the 21st Century; Reflections of a Neophyte, P.E. Moore discusses the ways in which occult and esoteric contemporary art tends to fall into four categories, himself quoting from Dr. Marco Pasi's book Coming Fourth By Night: "(...) The first is the representation of esoteric symbols or images associated with esotericism. (...) The second is the production of artistic objects (picture, sculpture, installation, etc.) that can be interpreted as talismans or fetishes or in manipulating matter that can be associated with occult sciences such as alchemy or magic. The third way is when the artistic work becomes a means to induce extraordinary experiences, which can be interpreted as having spiritual / mystical / initiatory / shamanic / magical / qualities. (...) Finally, the fourth way is when the artistic work is the result of a direct inspiration / communication from spirit entities or of a visionary / mystical experience."

From each artistic reference I will discuss, I may extrapolate elements to be adapted into the material research of my project. As such, chapter two will connect thesis and project more concretely.

Earlier in his essay, Moore names the emergence of Chaos Magick during the 1970's as a stark influence to the ways in which contemporary art and magic converge today. A key component to the philosophy of Chaos Magick is its DIY approach to practicing Magic and the refusal to codify its principles. Instead, it strictly advocates for an individualized approach to practicing Magic(k) which has continued to resonate with artists since. He also later mentions the undeniable yet more recently noticeable influence of Wicca on artists and their practices, saying: "(...) the nonhierarchical and non-centralised structures of these paths ensures that they continue to flourish in our internet age, having been adopted by legions of artists who wish to subvert dominant forms of knowledge." (Moore, 2019)[1]

Understanding the key motivation and influences will help give context and gain a deeper insight on each magic practice's, artist's and/or project's influences and methodology. Each reference should offer a distinct insight and approach to magic art and explore how different artistic mediums may intersect with different forms of magic. Categorizing magic artistic practices as cited above could be a helpful indicator.

(...)

Chapter #3 ✧

Key components
  • Applied insights
  • Prototyping and reflecting
  • Additional references

The third chapter will first reflect on the main take-away-s of the previous two chapters and summarize how it informed my project up to this point.

Following this, chapter three will take on a more back-and-forth approach to project and thesis, as a documentation and critical reflection of my prototyping process towards a final project.

Thesis Outline

Feedback

Feedback session - 16th October w/ Lexie & Wyn

  • Clear and concise plan
  • Picture of prototype helped -> Visual examples may be important
  • Link between Thesis and Project is very clear but a clearer description of the project could be included in the protocols chapter
  • Timetable seems chaotic/ like it needs revision
  • Wider context could benefit from contemporary examples of Magic practices, and comparisons to past practices
  • To think about: How do aesthetic components come into the idea of magic and the occult?

Feedback session - 16th October w/ Lidia

  • Be more precise in the aspect of magic I want to investigate -> Narrow down
  • What is the intervention/goal of the project
  • Magic>Art -> Art>Magic = Shift the focus
  • -> own perspective on the link between magic and art -> elaborate my intentions
  • Make the abstract connection in my mind more explicit to the outside/reader
  • Through narrowing down the subject -> Key points will fall naturally into a hierarchy -> Which will help pin-point the core of the project
  • Expand on the wider context

Feedback session - 30th October w/ Lidia

  • Thesis: What is the main research question?
  • The outline doesn’t necessarily need the introduction to be written and done, it can also still be an outline
  • Ch.1: outline does not need example text/the actual text
  • Ch.1 move “My aim (..)” the introduction
  • The outline a statement of intention (what, why and how do I want to write about)
  • Ch.2 -> make my aim more clear throughout outline and proposal -> art for the purpose of magic (not other way around)
  • Maybe in Ch.2 I could cover art to magic vs magic to art and compare
  • Thesis outline does not necessarily need “one final” research questions but it needs a topic/direction which is described
  • “Doing Magic” can be abstract but don’t leave stuff to interpretation
OR be clear on what is up for interpretation and what is no

Feedback session - 13th November w/ Lidia

  • generally very good, "almost/pretty much there"
  • intro: mention mode of address
  • stay focus on the central theme/topic -> the intersection of art and magic
  • “subverting frameworks”-part is a bit abstract still -> move to proposal w/ examples
  • think of a more specific audience (mention it!) whos my public? who benefits?
  • add sources! as harvard
  • mention if art-based Magic and magic-based Art are my own categories
  • add examples if I can
  • How does ch.2 relate to the research question?
  • ch.3 how will the back-and-forth look? Elaborate on that more
  • and how does it connect to the research question (add this to each end of chapter outline)
  • start/try formulating the research question!
  • (Recommendation: Owl House (Cartoon))
  • Add the interaction/group to proposal thesis

Feedback session - 27th October w/ Lidia

  • Thesis:
  • Keep the outline as a working document while writing the thesis (like a map)
  • Q. for outline and proposal: Who is the public? not specific enough YET
  • Q.: Where and how do I meet this audience? some more detail)
  • Ch.1.: clarify why I chose 3 working definitions and why these (in the thesis)
  • Ch.3.: How will I reflect on the experiments and what are the criteria I will use to reflect on them.
  • Clarify what I mean with idiosyncratic Magic practices
  • Multiple sources are separated with ; -> (Bellisario, 2025; Author, 2020)
  • Ch.3.: Questions -> What are the criteria I use to answer these questions
  • maybe some I develope through the research process

Reflection(s) & plans

intro:

  • formulate research question
  • add mode of address
  • in short sentence(s) describe art-based Magic vs magic-based Art approach
  • stay focused on Art and Magic intersection -> make "..Science, Religion.." more concise
  • add specific target audience
  • move "..subverting existing frameworks.." to project proposal
  • reformulate motivation-paragraph -> shorten
  • add individual use and collaborative use -> collaborative aspect -> Magic as connection w/ people/group

Chapter 1:

  • Add sources to each section (Harvard citation)

Chapter 2:

  • Add examples (artists, artworks, art-based vs magic-based)
  • Sources
  • Describe how Ch.2 contributes to the research question

Chapter 3:

  • Describe the "back-and-forth" between thesis and project -> how? why? documentation method
  • Add prototyping example
  • Describe how Ch.3 contributes to the research question

After reevaluating my project, I also decided to change most of my first chapter after realizing that I was going off topic too much by focusing on beliefs and history. Instead, I'd like to "jump right into" current movements, topics and ways of practicing Magic that align with my own perspective and reflect the core motivations of my thesis. I think this will also help connect the thesis topic with the wider context I wrote about in the proposal, as well as, my general interest and methods of the project.

I know it's quite close to the second reader deadline, but I'll try to grind out as much as I can until then. But this shift also means I have to go through a number of new references, which I linked in the reading box beneath each sub-chapter..

Feedback session - 30th October w/ Lidia

  • Connection between project and thesis can be more clear
  • PP: Add “art to cast magic/do magic ritual” not use magic to do art
  • Explain idea and what/how in more connected words
  • Be more explicit on what I want the user to get from the project
  • Elaborate on how I want to compile and document my research (f.ex. annotation? what type of information? insights/practices/scenarios etc “a bit more flesh”)
  • In short words: explain/include my own perspective
  • Add months to time schedule (maybe timeline from here to deadline?)
  • Expand on “why” -> “investigate myself” give 2-3 concrete examples on what fascinates me about project/thesis -> specific about the research questions -> f.ex. there’s a lot of occult art (art informed by magic) but not magic informed by art, or art-based magic/other way around
  • Expand/explain previous practice
  • Add concrete examples/practitioners/researchers working in the same context as me/or in contrast to what I want to do
  • Give more context to history and examples (be careful about big statements without giving context/arguments to prove it)
  • Watch out for the phrasing when making statements -> my perspective? whose statement? arguments? ALWAYS give examples
  • If based on opinion or intuition be explicit about it
  • Expand wider context with concrete example!

Feedback session - 18th November w/ Feline

  • [WHAT?]
    • Make first paragraph more concise -> merge last paragraph -> Be to the point with what
    • Art-based paragraph can be shorter, doesn't need so much detail
    • -> Wider context
    • Underlining -> Could be changed to footnote glossary
  • [HOW?]
    • Check if collapsed boxes are exported in PDF
  • [WHY?]
    • Last two sections need to be first
    • Expand those sections
    • Shorten first section
    • Highlight quote -> move to start or end
    • 2nd paragraph could be in wider context
    • -> Tie to references
  • [PRE. PRACTICE]
    • As previously mentioned.. -> Be clear and direct
    • Previous Projects -> What exactly is useful
    • ->What/how of it relates to the protocols
  • [WIDER CONTEXT]
    • Some can be moved to WHY?
    • Add specific examples and references
    • Elaborate on Magic in established religions/practices
    • Stay specific/focused on the project/research question

Feedback session - 27th November w/ Lidia

  • Proposal:
  • Intro how are the Protocols for Magic “activated”? presented? etc? (in the publication and outside)
  • Feedback -> What are the criteria?? Connected to how I evaluate it in ch.3.
  • Specifiy audience in more detail -> Even narrower! (where? how? do I meet this public f.ex.)
  • "(…)maintaining anti-capitalist.. approach." -> Does not come up again
  • -> but should be more explicit as a central concern to the project’s design

MOCK ASSESSMENT - 5th Nov -> PAD

  • Q&A (Summarized by Manetta)

Q: you talk way more about magic then about art in your presentation? A: agree, want to focus more on art at some point, but it feels important to have a very solid understanding of magic first Q: how do you see your outcome right now?
A: would like to make a publication, not one book, but composite publications of different parts unbound, with different elements creating components that can be used in different ways.
Q: like a manual?
A: sort of, more like templates that can be used for people's own interpretation of them maybe worksheets, introductory material I don't want to create this specific view on what magic is. The audience would be people interested to introduce themselves into magic, or people with magic practices that want to introduce art into it
Q: You mentioned different definitions of magic, is there one specific one that you are using?
A: I have my own personal interpretation, i can't try to not do it, but it will happen anyway I try to balance it between the supernatural point of view of magic and the more magic-as-a-mode-of-thinking, and merge the two, and see magic as a connection to your environment, how you connect with people and interact with the world with intention and purpose, and how this can be magical. This is where i see magic happening.
Q: response to the worksheets of one specific spell: do you want to compile the different perspective or simply to document process. Or something else? How do you want to use them?
A: Taking everything in consideration of all the workshops... as a way to have an end result... to see what works for the most people and what is interesting... like the workshop setting a lot, moment of doing together is something to further explore collective statue? imagining the workbooks during the gradshow... as a moment of collective making

  • very precise in your phrasing and presenting and thinking!
