Writing on the wiki

Since I started xpub I realized I have not written much on the wiki, the reason is mostly the visual element (the form) of the writings + the almost impossible to read editor for the source of the pages.

I do like writing though, so during my xpub 1.5 summer I am making an effort to win this block over.

This is an amazing space to have, and I wish to keep it beyond my graduation, though if I want to keep it alive and maintain it, first it needs to have something to organize / take care of.

During my first year I wrote more and more diversly (even if it wasn't on the wiki), I started writing code more often, accompanied by some small dev logs for some projects I started, trying to grasp the starting point and the new discoveries I made during the process. Another example is documentation of projects overall, something I never really did or considered before starting the master and finally some very small ideas, generally no longer that 4 lines (Later during the year, we were introduced to PMoMMs).

Lurking on the wiki

I am more of a wiki-reader than a wiki-writer. I used the wiki a lot in my first year not to add anything but to look for interesting things.

I have though of some vague lurking methods anytime I had an idea or an interest I wanted to follow. I started doing this mostly because at times, in class, when quoting or mentioning some tools or topics a general answer from our tutors was "Ah yes, X tried to do this" or "Special Issue n. X was about this", so I couldn't resist but to dive in the xpub memories looking for more information.

Documenting is a general use of the wiki, so when thinking of an idea, I started using keywords to look for pages containing them. This was very helpful and a nice introduction to past threads and resources.

find the good documenters and check out their wiki:

I feel like in every year there has to be at least one good wiki documenter, one person that not only writes down what they try, but also about their failures and findings, these people are pure gold.

Bonus: we share the wiki with LB students, in the past LB and XPUB was one thing. I feel like their tutors don't convey the pros of having such a space availble (if they think this is the case) because most of them don't use it, but sometimes there is some interesting stuff there as well, keep that in mind.
