Intro
$ uptime is a command that returns set of values involving, the current time, and the amount of time system is in running state, number of users currently logged in, and the load time for the past 1, 5 and 15 minutes respectively (on linux the command comes with options).
Running $ uptime on your local terminal will output these values for your computer. logging into a server and running $ uptime will respond with the servers stats.
Uptime is generally used as a measure for system reliability (yes please question that).
Turning to cerealbox, I recognize it as a highly temporal server. Not only for the fact that it goes down often, it also has a determined moment of initialization (ironically also called birth) which is the start of our years program, and an equally determined life end (year 24/26 graduation).
Another layer of time is created through the servers micro-material temporality (geological history and futures).
In that sense multiple time layers connect a community that use the server, the servers own operations and its material relations.

what do we use cerealbox for?
- files
- learning / testing environment
- only few dependencies/ programs run on it (API's)
manifesto
- space for learning and prototyping: we do not judge different skill levels but aim for openness of process and making understandable, admit to error, failure and unusable ideas,
- things/files are allowed to be broken, just because its online (public) does not mean its 'working' or finished (it is not intended to serve everybody, but mainly the students?)
- everyone is 'superuser' (has the same rights) we help each other (password forgotten etc but also with managing the server since not everyone is equally used to working with it)
- acknowledge servers limit (keep an eye on file sizes and ask group before upload big batches)
- infrastructure: cerealbox is vitally entangled with the Willem de Kooning Academy building where the xpub studio is located. the server is running on this building electricity and ethernet. The building is not always accessible to students which puts the server out of reach, at certain times it will shut down with the buildings electricity. (it does not always serve and these off hours are not always in our control)

server ecology
- Cerealbox hub.xpub.nl/cerealbox is part of the HUB
The HUB enables you to be super nomad, you can put the RPi anywhere, as long as it's plugged on a network that gives an IP to the RPi, and it has internet access (like your laptop or phone would), then it will immediately be available on the HUB
--> draw a connection here to the fact that we will have Cerealbox on site at the Si27 event, like our class we are malleable, (temporarily) inhabit different environments but have a base (through which we met and return to) at the hoogeschool rotterdam (hr)
- (as far as I understand) the hub is a space/ computer where multiple RPi servers are connected to the xvm, using tinc
- xvm is a server located in willem de kooning server room (running on hr network)
- tinc is a protocol that facilitates the http rerouting RPi's -> xmv
tinc is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) daemon that uses tunnelling and encryption to create a secure private network between hosts on the Internet
- this becomes apparent when running

Splinter is our travelling local server that gets activated in workshops and worksessions. It responds to two different needs / desire we had: first of all the urge to keep away from cloud-based corporate extractive platforms for the sharing of our files and notes, secondly the desire to materialize the infrastructure we would use to document a situation as something visible and touchable, in the very same place. This curious presence in the room allows users to get closer to the server they are using, to try things in an environment where it is easier to experiment without fear of messing up stable systems.
