How do participatory speech practices about sexist language become a feminist method of unlearning and redefinition?
Intro
- In this essay I will explore how participatory speech practices can function not only as reflective dialogue but as a feminist methodology that enables unlearning internalized sexism and collectively redefining meaning. I will analyze that through my experiences of my project part, which is a series of consciousness-raising meetings that invite participants to speak about our the sexist language embedded in everyday life.
- I want to show why language matters, how it shapes perception and identity, and why it is a feminist issue.
Chapter 1
- This chapter introduces language as a social construct that reflects and reinforces patriarchal power.
- – there are multiple ways in which women are oppressed by and through language, but that would take too long to discover so I will focus on the act of naming and through that the validating of experiences
Chapter 2
- This chapter will speak about the concept (and history) of consciousness raising groups in the 70s
- – then it will uncover how that method is still valuable in our time
- – and how collective dialogue can lead to new interpretations of words and how the feeling of togetherness builds consciousness, political will and power.
Chapter 3
- This chapter will combine the theory with my lived experiences through the meetings
- – What was my experience in these meetings? What other peoples? (get feedback from them)
- – How did that reflect or not reflect the theory?
Conclusion
- Compare my expectations to the actual outcome
Glossary
- The glossary will contain words that, I find, need more explanation
