Introduction

First, a question to the group:

What is Magic?

Most general definitions describe Magic (noun) as a force, or the employing of a force outside of the bounds of Science or measurable natural laws, able to affect reality, attributes of reality or someone's perception there of. With the specific interpretation of the "force", in other words, the "source of magic" depending on cultural and historical contexts.

Other sources may frame Magic as a “mode-of-thinking”, the lens through which one may perceive and engage with the world. Through this view, Magic isn’t necessarily described as the conceptual manifestation of “invisible forces” but rather a observable psychological phenomena. Often as a means to distance Magic from supernatural implications. (Sorensen, 2006) (Dukes, 2002)

Part One - Correspondences

Components for Magic Spells (...)

In magic, the term correspondences is used to mean the symbolic associations we give to particular material, visual and/or textual elements of a magic ritual, spell or artefact (or things in general). For example, the symbolic meanings given to colours, shapes, animals, plants, stones, etc. To illustrate, in many cultures throughout history, the colour yellow has been associated with the sun, sun light and or light in general.

Therefore, magic that aims to target, speak or invoke aspects of the sun may use yellow as a correspondence via material and visual means to create a link to/access the magic associated with it. Naturally, other examples of correspondences/symbolic associations may be much more complex and or abstract. (I.e. the many varying correspondences and purposes ascribed to deities, gods or saints, the planetary correspondences in Astrology, +example)


It is important to note that correspondences/symbolism(s) are not universal, but are ever-evolving signifiers that reflect the cultural, religious, material and historical contexts in which they emerge and exist in.
Many belief systems and practices may incorporate and work with a defined set of symbolic associations. However, correspondences can also be personal and informed by an individuals, or group’s lived experience, believes and symbolic associations. Although the ways in which our environment and upbringing subconsciously influences and primes our symbolic associations may not always be apparent to us.
