For the 5th episode of our radio show, aired on 25-11-03, we got together as a group that was interested in doing a live jam with a range of instruments and tools.

Records, CDs, Tapes | Daan & Luca

Daan went through his music collection consisting of vinyl, cassettetapes and cd's. Tried to take out some rare ones which could serve as a backdrop for all the inputs that were existing in the radioshow. There were many ambient (modular) synth tracks, some sound collages and noise. Things without rhythm or classic song structures, so the tracks were open for layering.

Lea and Luca played and remixed samples using Strudel, a free and open source live coding platform to write dynamic music pieces in the browser.

Typewriter & Dot Matrix Printer | Robin & Ema

Part of the jamming‘ ensemble of Monday Nov 3^rd broadcast were also Emanuele Arrigoni, Robin de Haan, Erika Model, N.E.C. (Dottie) Parson, as they did their first public performance of a musical journey through the sonic qualities of printers—with a strong emphasis on improvisation, yet promising dramatic intensity. Ema and Erika did an amazing improv, playing into the sound-layering with typewriter sounds. The printed result of which spelled out the line Everything is noise, you interpret. to the rhythm of their play throughout the radio show. Whereas Robin and Dottie played a series of pre-written .txt files using a script that stores print jobs, and repeats them, in a desired order.

Luca brought some text excerpts in both Portugese and Dutch written during the 1600s on South America by Kaspar Barlaeus. Luca and Robin read them out together in both languages.

Twee van de barbaren gingen met Maurits naar Holland om onbekende landen, sterren en volkeren te zien. De anderen werden vereerd met onbeduidende geschenken, zoals messen, bijlen en kleine spiegeltjes – aangename snuisterijen voor wilden.

An invented, improvised language

From time to time, Tommi intervened by speaking an invented and improvised language, producing weird sounds that probably are related to some languages on planet Earth, but we cannot know for sure…

GNOME System sounds | Tommi

Tommi plugged in their laptop, opened the GNOME system settings, and, from time to time, played the sound samples for the system. In addition to that, they also played the test sounds to measure the left-right volume of the stereo output.
