where do you end and I begin is a video-installation where four decomissioned surveillance cameras look at a rotating mirror The placement of the cameras are such that each camera can observe itself and the remaining ones at a time An AI object recognition algorythm locally trained by me using thougsangds of images of surveillance cameras attemps to distinguish themselves in the video frame the audience sees the video output and where two systems interact one where a camera "sees" itself in the video but also the other the work is a reference to lacans individuation process the idea of a child and their first encounter with a mirror the child becomes and individual and separate themselves from their parents the moment they are able to identify and construct the self the work addresses the widespread usage of AI recognition systems and tries to fill in a gap: the non-existence of algorythm trained on the surveillance cameras themeselves. Who watches the controlling agents? the work explores the tension between psychological process, surveillance and the future of AI

Angelikis video reminded me of the day I was walking in the residential neighborhood of Boemenbuurt. It was a calm chill morning after I had a delicious brunch in one of my favourite bakeries in town. My keychain has been a bit flaky lately and as I was walking I hear a metallic "tiiinK" hitting the concrete bricks. I look back desperately because lately I've lost too many keys. I inspect the ground, take my sunglasses off, already thinking which key I had lost. As I am crouching and not believing my eyes because no shimmering metal object was laying there, I hear another "tiiinK", this time piercing through my head. That one completely struck me. For a second it felt like the source of the sound came from within my brain. No key was on the floor.

I stand up, and I realize I'm in front of one of those multi-floor rich dutch houses (it's the neighborhood). There's a small black device by the porch, which screamed one more time for me. I am used to finding round black boxes (dome cameras), but the circular element in this one looked more like a speaker, and it had a proximity sensor. I understood my presence was unwanted in that place, which in this case was the public sidewalk.

I felt extremely angry, as my right to be in public was taken from me. I felt like finding a brick to throw at, or to knock at these people's house. I felt like this device tricked my perception of space, making me believe things that didn't happen. And finally, it was 11am on a sunday morning. Plenty of kids, animals and just people walking by and enjoying a calm morning in an urban space which is supposed to host populations. I don't understand people that live in cities without wanting people to live nearby. Maybe become a hermit or something.

This is an example of Architecture of Fear, or Hostile Architectures. Public tools that oppress and segregate the public.

Questions to Angeliki

While watching the video, I also was very curious in knowing what kind of stance is held by public institutions (Rotterdam Municipality) and homeowners that install these devices. Any laws regulate this?

What is being depicted in the last scences? The square indent in the round sidewalk corner, and the pole?

What encounters were generated by the harmonizer in public space? How was a conceptual sound installation received by the people hanging out in these spots?

Started some background research on the values and master plan of the Maritiem Museum, revealing some traces of colonial dutch history. We went for a walk there and inspected two Mosquitos used to keep the youth away.

Dissecating technological advancements applied by authority and policing bodies; finding grey zones in dutch law; détournement; the dutch obliviousness of dtuch-brazil's historical entanglements

I want to figure out if pulling out certain tricks can challenge dutch worldviews and confront them with their past and present.

dutch worldviews on the WIC, the tension between orality and textuality, colonial technologies that have shaped history and territory, threads that still linger in contemporary politics

I want to be provocative, and bring up a global south perspective to the conversation.

We made a sticker zine, to vandalize the mosquito prop that Daan made. My entry consisted of a quote by Édouard Glissant in Poetics of Relation, pg 7:

'Je te salue, vieil Océan!" Vou still preserve on your crests the

silent boat of our births, your chasrns are our own unconscious,

furrowed with fugitive memories. Then you lay out

these new shores, where we hook our tar-streaked wounds,

our reddened mouths and stifled outcries.

This was paired with quotes taken from the Maritiem Museum, and their failure to recognize dutch navigation rooted in colonial power.

The Maritiem Museum brags about discoveries of the unknown, reproducing colonial rethoric. In their values, an image of a bussola to "north" their values. A reminiscence of colonial technology guides the museum.
