Feedback session - 16th October w/ Lexie & Wyn

• Clear and concise plan
• Picture of prototype helped -> Visual examples may be important
• Link between Thesis and Project is very clear but a clearer description of the project could be included in the protocols chapter
• Timetable seems chaotic/ like it needs revision
• Wider context could benefit from contemporary examples of Magic practices, and comparisons to past practices
• To think about: How do aesthetic components come into the idea of magic and the occult?

• Thesis: What is the main research question?
• The outline doesn’t necessarily need the introduction to be written and done, it can also still be an outline
• Ch.1: outline does not need example text/the actual text
• Ch.1 move “My aim (..)” the introduction
• The outline a statement of intention (what, why and how do I want to write about)
• Ch.2 -> make my aim more clear throughout outline and proposal -> art for the purpose of magic (not other way around)
• Maybe in Ch.2 I could cover art to magic vs magic to art and compare
• Thesis outline does not necessarily need “one final” research questions but it needs a topic/direction which is described
• “Doing Magic” can be abstract but don’t leave stuff to interpretation

• PP: Add “art to cast magic/do magic ritual” not use magic to do art
• Explain idea and what/how in more connected words
• Be more explicit on what I want the user to get from the project
• Elaborate on how I want to compile and document my research (f.ex. annotation? what type of information? insights/practices/scenarios etc “a bit more flesh”)
• In short words: explain/include my own perspective
• Add months to time schedule (maybe timeline from here to deadline?)
• Expand on “why” -> “investigate myself” give 2-3 concrete examples on what fascinates me about project/thesis -> specific about the research questions -> f.ex. there’s a lot of occult art (art informed by magic) but not magic informed by art, or art-based magic/other way around
• Expand/explain previous practice
• Add concrete examples/practitioners/researchers working in the same context as me/or in contrast to what I want to do
• Give more context to history and examples (be careful about big statements without giving context/arguments to prove it)
• Watch out for the phrasing when making statements -> my perspective? whose statement? arguments? ALWAYS give examples
• If based on opinion or intuition be explicit about it

Q: you talk way more about magic then about art in your presentation? A: agree, want to focus more on art at some point, but it feels important to have a very solid understanding of magic first Q: how do you see your outcome right now?
A: would like to make a publication, not one book, but composite publications of different parts unbound, with different elements creating components that can be used in different ways.
Q: like a manual?
A: sort of, more like templates that can be used for people's own interpretation of them maybe worksheets, introductory material I don't want to create this specific view on what magic is. The audience would be people interested to introduce themselves into magic, or people with magic practices that want to introduce art into it
Q: You mentioned different definitions of magic, is there one specific one that you are using?
A: I have my own personal interpretation, i can't try to not do it, but it will happen anyway I try to balance it between the supernatural point of view of magic and the more magic-as-a-mode-of-thinking, and merge the two, and see magic as a connection to your environment, how you connect with people and interact with the world with intention and purpose, and how this can be magical. This is where i see magic happening.
Q: response to the worksheets of one specific spell: do you want to compile the different perspective or simply to document process. Or something else? How do you want to use them?
A: Taking everything in consideration of all the workshops... as a way to have an end result... to see what works for the most people and what is interesting... like the workshop setting a lot, moment of doing together is something to further explore collective statue? imagining the workbooks during the gradshow... as a moment of collective making
